It’s making waves – the Barrio Viejo brand has quickly made a name for itself. No surprise, as Thorsten Wolfertz, a well-known figure in the cigar trade, is the driving force behind the project. In professional circles, the Solingen native has long been respected for his work as an importer.
Barrio Viejo Cigars – From Trader to Manufacturer
Brands like Alec Bradley, Nicarao, A.J. Fernandez, Oliva, Condega, and Plasencia were introduced to the German market with his involvement. With *Barrio Viejo*, Wolfertz has taken the step from trading to manufacturing. Thanks to his strong industry connections, a new line was developed in Honduras, tailored to the needs of price-conscious aficionados.
The exact location of production remains a bit of a mystery. What’s known is that the cigars are made in a smaller factory in Danlí. But the key lies in the blend: the filler and binder use Honduran tobaccos, rounded out with a wrapper from Nicaragua.
Barrio Viejo: Affordable Cigars With Character
The result is impressive: a pleasantly balanced smoke with a medium-bodied profile. What really stands out, however, is the price. These bundle cigars offer an almost unbeatable price-performance ratio.

Statements like that are often heard – but here, they hold true. Solid longfillers like the Robusto for under five euros speak for themselves.
Transition to VCF: The Future of Barrio Viejo
As of January 1, 2023, Thorsten Wolfertz is no longer active as an independent importer. His company, including the *Barrio Viejo* brand, was handed over to VCF (Vandermarliere Cigar Family). Production and availability remain secured. Thorsten continues in the industry, now serving as Sales Director at VCF.
