Former Pipes – Danish Craftsmanship With Tradition Since 1959

Few names in the world of pipe making symbolize experience and consistency as strongly as Hans “Former” Nielsen. For over six decades, he has devoted himself to pipe making – a true rarity in this field. His story begins in the 1950s, when pipe smoking in Denmark was still part of coming of age. Many young people received their first pipe for their confirmation – including Former, who started working as a repairer at Poul Rasmussen’s shop in Copenhagen at just 15 years old. Although the pay was low, the craftsmanship he learned there proved invaluable.

The nickname “Former” actually goes back to his childhood, inspired by British actor George Formby. Later, the Danish meaning of the word – “shaper” or “creator” – turned out to be a fitting second layer to his journey as a pipe maker.

The Career of a Danish Pipe Maker: Hans “Former” Nielsen

After two years, he gained further experience with Sven Knudsen, who had also worked at W.Ø. Larsen. His next stop, after military service, took him back to W.Ø. Larsen, where over the course of a decade he excelled in production, sandblasting, and quality control. More than a dozen pipe makers worked there – many of whom are now well-known among connoisseurs.

At the same time, Former began building his own small workshop at home. This turned out to be a visionary step – especially when Emil and Jess Chonowitsch encouraged him to create pipes under his own name. Demand, particularly from Japan, was enormous. He left W.Ø. Larsen and focused entirely on his own production – initially making 15 pipes a month, soon significantly more. His work quickly attracted attention from German retailers as well.

Independent Workshop – Constantly Growing Demand

By building his own brand, Former met the growing demand for high-quality freehands, especially in Asia. His pipes stood out for their craftsmanship, classic design, and functional quality. Word spread – not only among collectors, but also among pipe enthusiasts who valued reliable, well-made products.

Former Pipes – Precisely Crafted, Timeless in Style

In 1986, Former supported the technical renewal of the Swiss pipe manufacturer “Bru-Bu” and also contributed to the development of the “Bentley” brand. It was there that he met his wife Daniela. After relocating to Lauenburg in 1997, he continued production – to this day, tobacco is still manufactured in the old workshop buildings. His collaboration with Dan Tobacco has continued ever since.

Even today, at over 80 years old, Former remains active. At trade shows, pipe exhibitions, and international events, he regularly showcases his latest work. He is considered a mentor to many younger pipe makers – including Holmer Knudsen and Henrik Kroll, with whom he regularly exchanges ideas. His pipes are not only considered top-notch smoking instruments, but also high-quality handcrafted collector’s items.
