From Epicurus to Epicure: The Philosophy of Enjoyment
The Greek philosopher Epicurus taught a life-affirming philosophy that centered on mindful enjoyment. His ideas were so influential that the term “epicure” became synonymous in English with a connoisseur of fine pleasures. Epicurus and his disciples gathered in an Athenian garden to exchange ideas—often accompanied by good food and wine, in true Greek tradition.
However, Epicurus’ philosophy was often misunderstood: his goal was not excessive luxury but rather the avoidance of discomfort. Hunger, pain, and fear were to be minimized, while contentment and well-being took center stage.
Enjoyment in Balance
Epicurus rejected excessive wealth and viewed dependency on material possessions critically. Today, one might call him a kind of minimalist. In his garden, simple foods like bread, cheese, and wine were served—humble yet delightful.
The notion that Epicurus led a hedonistic lifestyle is more legend than truth. Yet as a philosopher who championed moderate enjoyment, he would likely find himself at home today as an aficionado.
Epicure Cigars – Great Taste at a Fair Price
It’s no surprise that his name serves as the inspiration for a cigar label. The Epicure AR—named after Armando Ramos—are puros from Ecuador. Their tobaccos come from the same harvests as those used in more expensive brands but do not meet all visual quality standards. The result: premium enjoyment at an affordable price.
