DB Design Berlin – Pipes

Design Berlin: Traditional Pipes from Thuringia

Design Berlin pipes are widely available in Germany, as they are distributed by Planta Tobacco Manufactory, whose products are well represented in specialist retailers.

The brand began in 1948 with Hubert Hartmann as Pfeifenstudio Hartmann in Berlin. Its first employees came from Ruhla, then the center of German pipe production. Initially, affordable shag pipes with nylon mouthpieces were manufactured, particularly for fine-cut tobacco. In 1954, Lothar Schirwitz joined the company and increasingly focused on high-quality pipes with Danish influences.

The Development of Design Berlin Pipes

Briar wood from Greece was specifically sourced to ensure better smoking quality. In 1975, the brand was renamed DB Design Berlin, and 9-mm filters became increasingly popular in pipes. As a creative freehand pipe maker, Lothar Schirwitz introduced innovative models but never sought the spotlight.

Political Change and Realignment

In the 1980s, the manufactory was acquired by Planta Tobacco Manufactory to create synergies in the tobacco business.

DB Design Berlin NOS Pipes
Unique pieces from Design Berlin: NOS pipes

After German reunification, DB took over the production facilities of the former VEB pipe factory in Bad Liebenstein and moved production to Schweina, into a historic building once home to Germany's largest pipe manufacturer, C. S. Reich.

Present Day

Today, Martin Schmalz leads production with a team of 12 employees. With an annual production of around 30,000 pipes, DB is Germany’s second-largest pipe manufacturer after Vauen, continuing Thuringia’s long-standing pipe-making tradition.

Distinctive DB Pipes

One of the standout features is the double smoke channel in the mouthpiece, ensuring a cool smoking experience. The designs range from classic to modern shapes. Models like the "Weltkugel" are particularly iconic. In addition to series pipes, hand-crafted freehand models are also available.

Elegant design & a pleasant smoking experience: Holger Danske pipes

All pipes feature acrylic mouthpieces and a 9-mm filter bore. The finishes vary from smooth to sandblasted or rusticated. Special models such as Holger Danske, NOS unique pieces, and the Limited Edition "Le Cœur de la France" are particularly sought after.

Special Features of Design Berlin Pipes

Modern laser engraving allows for customized engravings, making exclusive house brands for retailers possible. The workshop also specializes in silver processing, offering Silver Spigot pipes at fair prices. DB pipes are ideal for both beginners and seasoned smokers looking for everyday use as well as unique models.
