Aliados Cigars: Masterpieces by Rolando Reyes
The Aliados brand represents premium cigar quality and an impressive tradition of craftsmanship. Brand founder Rolando Reyes had a clear goal: every cigar should be a true work of art. He emphasized not only flawless aesthetics but also perfect flavor and an impeccable burn.
Reyes was known for personally crafting cigars – a rarity in the industry. Born in 1924 and a master of his trade, he learned the art of cigar making from the ground up. His career began in Cuba, where he worked for renowned brands such as Partagas, Romeo y Julieta, and H. Upmann. After the Cuban Revolution, he relocated to the United States and founded the brand Cuba Aliados, named after a well-known Cuban bus line. Due to the protected geographical designation of the Caribbean island, cigars under the name Aliados are available in Europe.
The Remarkable Story of Aliados
Rolando Reyes was not only a perfectionist but also known for his eccentric work habits. His workday began in the afternoon, as he preferred to work in peace during the evening. After midnight, he often invited friends – mostly fellow Cuban exiles – to share wine and conversations about their lost homeland and the art of cigar making. This passion and creative exchange contributed to making Aliados cigars a symbol of excellence. A few remaining stock items from this era are still available today and continue to delight connoisseurs worldwide.
Despite his impressive expertise, Reyes had limited success in passing on his skills. He was more of a doer than a teacher, making it challenging for his successors to maintain his standards. After retiring from the company in 2010 and passing away in 2012, the brand faced difficulties.
The Revival of the Aliados Brand
In 2021, a new chapter began in the history of Aliados when Oliva Cigars acquired the brand, breathing new life into it. This news excited the industry, particularly Ernesto Perez-Carrillo, one of the most renowned cigar makers and a former apprentice of Rolando. He immediately offered his support to restore the brand to its former glory.
Ernesto made it his personal mission to revive the original flavor of Aliados cigars. After more than 100 different blends, he finally achieved this ambitious goal.
The Versatile Portfolio of Aliados
Today, the range includes two outstanding series: The Aliados Original Blend, a Honduran puro, is crafted at the Tabacalera of Julio Eiroa. Eiroa is known for his work with Aladino and previously with the brand Camacho, before it was sold to Davidoff. Eiroa fondly remembers Rolando Reyes and appreciates his influence on the industry.
The limited Cabinet Edition, on the other hand, is produced in the Dominican Republic. Ernesto Perez-Carrillo himself oversees production and dedicates this series as a personal homage to his former mentor. These cigars are a unique collector’s item and an excellent addition to any discerning aficionado’s collection.
