The Danish A. H. Riise was not only a pharmacist but also a researcher. During his 30 years on the Virgin Island of St. Thomas, he experimented with previously unknown plants and herbs. However, Riise gained fame primarily for his rum.
A. H. Riise Rum: The Journey of a Young Pharmacist
Albert Heinrich Riise, his full name, was a curious individual. After completing his training at the pharmacy in his hometown of Ærøskøbing, he moved to Copenhagen to study botany and chemistry — both sciences that were still new at the beginning of the 19th century.

His life took a significant turn in 1838 when Riise received an offer to go to the Caribbean, which was still known as the West Indies at the time. On the Virgin Islands, which belonged to Denmark at that time and are now part of the United States, he quickly made a name for himself as a pharmacist. He made use of the rich flora of the Caribbean, and his products were highly sought after in the Antilles.
Rum by A. H. Riise: From Medicine to Delight
Riise gained international recognition mainly for his rum. Rum enthusiasts worldwide are still grateful to him for exclusive lines such as Non Plus Ultra. On St. Thomas, Riise learned the craft of distillation, which particularly fascinated him as a pharmacist.
At that time, rum was not only appreciated as a beverage but also used as a remedy for various ailments such as stomach problems. Over time, Riise's rum evolved into a popular specialty that even earned him awards in his Danish homeland.
The A. H. Riise Rum Collection
Even the royal navy received part of their pay in the form of rum — the myth of the rum-drinking sailor is therefore not unfounded. A tribute to this is the Royal Danish Navy Naval Cadet. With its strong fruity aromas and a light sweetness, it awakens a longing for distant lands.

To fully experience the art of blending at A. H. Riise, one should not overlook the Non Plus Ultra. It stands at the top of the collection, impressing with a carefully selected blend of the finest ingredients. Above it is only the velvety Signature. This top-class rum delights with its multi-layered aromas of fruits, nuts, and a hint of eucalyptus.
