The Danish A. H. Riise was not only a pharmacist but also a researcher. During his 30 years on the Virgin Island of St. Thomas, he experimented with previously unknown plants and herbs. However, Riise gained fame primarily for his rum.

Albert Heinrich Riise, his full name, was a curious individual. After completing his training at the pharmacy in his hometown of Ærøskøbing, he moved to Copenhagen to study botany and chemistry — both sciences that were still new at the beginning of the 19th century.

His life took a significant turn in 1838 when Riise received an offer to go to the Caribbean, which was still known as the West Indies at the time. On the Virgin Islands, which belonged to Denmark at that time and are now part of the United States, he quickly made a name for himself as a pharmacist. He made use of the rich flora of the Caribbean, and his products were highly sought after in the Antilles.

Riise gained international recognition mainly for his rum. Rum enthusiasts worldwide are still grateful to him for exclusive lines such as Non Plus Ultra. On St. Thomas, Riise learned the craft of distillation, which particularly fascinated him as a pharmacist.
