Davidoff Cigars – Expertise and Quality for Over a Century
The traditional cigar brand Davidoff is closely tied to the name of its founder: Zino Davidoff. Raised in a tobacco family, he dedicated his life to refining tobacco products. His principles continue to shape the brand to this day. Zino was born in 1906 into a family with deep roots in the tobacco trade. After emigrating to Switzerland, his father Henri opened a tobacco shop in Geneva, which soon became a popular spot among Russian émigrés.
At an early age, Zino became interested in blending cigarettes and pipe tobacco. His curiosity and open-mindedness led him on a journey through Central America and Cuba, where he gained deeper insight into tobacco cultivation and cigar production.
Zino Davidoff as a Pioneer of Cigar Culture
During his travels, Zino experienced tobacco farming up close and established first contacts with producers. After returning home, he modernized the family shop in Geneva – including the world’s first climate-controlled cigar room. Inspired by the tropical air of Central America, this innovation led to the development of the humidor. With a well-stocked inventory, Davidoff managed to secure access to Havanas even during World War II. Later, Zino launched his first cigar line, named after famous wineries – a statement of quality and sophistication.
Davidoff and the Cuban Cigar Era
A key chapter began with the agreement between Davidoff and Cubatabaco. However, this partnership ended abruptly in 1989, when Zino publicly burned cigars – a clear message against declining quality. Nevertheless, he continued his work with great success. Since 1970, he had been working with the Basel-based company Oettinger – a partnership that played a crucial role in building the brand’s international presence.
A New Beginning in the Dominican Republic
After parting ways with Cuban tobacco, Davidoff relocated its production to the Dominican Republic. There, several new series were created and widely acclaimed. Other brands, including Dunhill, followed suit and established production there as well.
When Zino Davidoff passed away in 1994, he left behind a remarkable legacy. Beyond cigars, he also launched a line of luxury goods under the Davidoff name. The product range is extensive.
